How would you benefit from the sales tax plan?

Greenville County voters have a big decision to make on Tuesday besides helping to pick South Carolina's next governor, U.S. senators and other high officials.

They'll also vote on whether to impose a 1 percent sales tax in order to pay for a major upgrade to the county's road network.

Each voter will have to weigh the cost against the benefit. Determining the exact benefit, however, takes a little homework.

That's because how each voter would benefit from the sales tax plan depends in part on that voter's individual circumstances.

Does he regularly drive on any of the roads that would be improved?

Does she have children who attend any of the schools that would get new sidewalks?

County officials have spelled out exactly what the sales tax money would buy – as they are required to do by state law – and posted the information on the county's Web site.

The problem is, it's a massive amount of information to digest.

The county needed 175 pages, for example, to detail just one of the four categories of projects, more than 1,200 miles of repaving work all over the county.

There's also 75 road projects, 23 bridge projects and 100 new or improved sidewalks, crosswalks, trails or bicycle lanes.

In the graphics above, we have grouped most of the projects by the community in which they would be built should voters approve the plan.
