Law enforcement is investigating at the scene of a deputy-involved shooting near Links O'Tryon Golf Course on the Greenville-Spartanburg county line.

The State Law Enforcement Division on Monday continued to investigate a deadly shooting involving a Greenville County deputy.

The sheriff's deputy shot Douglas Marrickus Rainey, 32, in the head Friday as he fought with a K-9 and the dog's handler, authorities said. The Sheriff's Office said the K-9 handler realized Rainey had a gun during the struggle and was yelling to other deputies that Rainey had a gun.

There is no video of the incident, SLED spokesman Thom Berry said Monday.

Rainey died of a single gunshot wound to the head, the Spartanburg County Coroner's Office said. The deputy who fired the fatal shot was placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure during investigations into officer-involved shootings. The Sheriff's Office declined to release the name of the deputy, stating it would be released once SLED concludes its investigation.

It was the the 33rd officer-involved shooting in South Carolina this year and the third involving a deputy of the Greenville County Sheriff's Office, SLED said. Last year, there were 48 officer-involved shootings in the state and four involving the Greenville County Sheriff's Office.

The latest incident started with the report of an armed robbery at about 10 a.m. at Dollar General between State 11 and State 14 in Gowensville, the Sheriff's Office said. Two deputies responded to the store, but the suspect fled on foot and officers lost sight of him.

Nearly three hours later, a resident on Link Drive spotted a person matching the description of the suspect from the Dollar General, Master Deputy Drew Pinciaro said. A search team canvassed the area and the subject was located.

A K-9 and the K-9 handler caught up to the man and a fight ensued, Pinciaro said. A deputy who later arrived at the scene shot the suspect during the struggle.

Investigators confirmed that Rainey was the suspect from the armed robbery at the Dollar General, Pinciaro said.
