Laurens County baby's death is under investigation.

The remains of an infant found inside a Laurens County apartment Monday were sealed inside two containers, Fountain Inn police said Tuesday.

The body was found inside a container which was inside another container in the bedroom area of the apartment, said Fountain Inn Police Chief Keith Morton.

Morton described the body's condition as in a state of "quite advance decomposition."

Laurens County Coroner Nick Nichols said he could not confirm the baby's gender or age pending an autopsy Tuesday.

The results of the autopsy could come Wednesday, Nichols' office said.

Morton said there will be additional testing by a pathologist and a forensic anthropologist to determined how the infant died.

"The baby's remains are in the best hands we can put them in and we will wait for the experts to tell us what they can determine," Morton said.

At least person is in questioning but no charges have been filed, Morton said.

Laurens County deputies were handling a routine eviction at Fountain Hill on Chapman Road when they discovered the remains, said Jarvis Reeder of the Sheriff's Office.

Investigators with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division have been asked to assist with the investigation.
